Southwest Monsoon Enhanced by Typhoon Dolphin Brings Heavy Rain to Metro Manila

On Saturday, August 8, 2026, the southwest monsoon enhanced by Typhoon Dolphin continues to bring heavy rain to Metro Manila and over 20 provinces, while a new low pressure area has been spotted outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility. Quezon City residents should prepare for potential flooding, transportation disruptions, and possible class or work suspensions as heavy rain persists throughout the day. Monitor PAGASA weather bulletins for updates, avoid flood-prone areas and unnecessary travel, prepare emergency kits, and check local government announcements for class and work suspensions.

Background

The southwest monsoon, locally known as habagat, brings rainy weather to the western Philippines from June to September. When a typhoon like Dolphin passes near or over the country, it enhances the monsoon flow, causing heavier and more widespread rainfall. The Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) is the region monitored by PAGASA for tropical cyclones; a low pressure area outside PAR may still affect the country if it moves closer. Similar enhancement events have caused significant flooding in past years, such as with Typhoon Yagi in 2018 and Typhoon Kiko in 2021.
